New British Embassy Lauded as Sign of Warmer Ties

British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook on Wednesday hailed his country's new embassy in Moscow as further proof of the blossoming diplomatic relationship between Russia and Britain. ""This is not the fortress embassy we might have built in the days of the Cold War,"" said Cook, speaking at an opening ceremony that was attended by Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and Princess Anne. ""To Igor and myself this building demonstrates the growing cooperation in world affairs between our two countries,"" Cook said in remarks reported by Reuters. ""The British Embassy and Russian Foreign Ministry used to be several kilometers apart - now they are close neighbors."" The ultra-modern behemoth of steel, wood and glass sparkled in the sunshine, a gleaming contrast to the stolid, stone facades of its neighbor - the White House, home to the federal government. The four squarish buildings - strung together by a series of walkways and all topped by green bronze roofs - project a vaguely casual and airy attitude.
