Luzhkov Fine-Tunes A Moscow TV Station

Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov's ill-disguised presidential ambitions will get a boost Monday when the first stage of his planned national television network starts broadcasting across Moscow. The city has invested millions of dollars in Center TV, a new network that will take over Channel 3 from MTK and 2x2, two little-watched local broadcasters. Anatoly Lysenko, the respected television producer whom Luzhkov picked to head Center TV, makes no secret of his support for Moscow's mayor and promises to back him should he decide to run for president in the year 2000. ""There is no independent television. It is a politicized business,"" Lysenko said. ""Luzhkov is an ambitious man. He even wants Moscow to have the best automobile, which I doubt is possible. But why shouldn't there be a good Moscow television station?"" Lysenko said in an interview Friday.
