Log On With a Twist at the Internet Bar

Moscow's young, trendy and privileged have new place to hang out and lighten their pockets. Base 14, the hip shopping and dining complex in Stoleshnikov Pereulok off Ulitsa Petrovka in the city center, which opened amid much pomp Thursday, offers a chance for even further detachment from Russia's often-grim reality -- an internet bar. A typical customer should probably come to buy a $100 pair of jeans in the Levi's store, then go upstairs, get a classic rock CD for his girlfriend and surf the Internet on one of five computer terminals while sipping a $12 cocktail and waiting for her. When the stylish girlfriend comes (late, of course), they can choose a shirt or leather jacket at the Chevignon store and have dinner for the ""average Moscow price"" of about $50 per head in the basement restaurant. Purchasing an extra Swatch wristwatch wouldn't hurt, but showing up late is not a problem -- the entire establishment is open around the clock.
