Garden Sales Peak as Dacha Rush Starts

For Viktor Bolshakov, director of the Sredi Tsvetov -- Among the Flowers -- seed market in central Moscow, the days before the May holidays are the ""hottest time of the year."" ""It is the season now and everybody goes to their dachas. It is always like this here before the holidays,"" said Bolshakov, pointing to the lines of people -- men and women, old and young -- who chatted about gardening while waiting in line outside his kiosks on a warm and sunny Tuesday afternoon. The real solidarity of Russia's workers, crossing all political and social boundaries, will be demonstrated this long holiday weekend not in parades in the streets of Moscow, but in the suburban trains and on dacha lots throughout the country, where millions of Russians will make their annual exodus from the cities to their country cottages, or dachas.
