New RTR Chief Toes Loyalty Line

The new chief of Russia's second-largest TV channel promised Tuesday he would not make major changes and warned that he would fire a group of employees who rebelled publicly against the previous chairman. ""The people who attempted to ignite a rebellion and split the company will have a hard time working here. They will have to leave,"" Nikolai Svanidze said in a press conference Tuesday. Svanidze was appointed by President Boris Yeltsin on Monday as chairman of the Russian Television and Radio Co. to replace Eduard Sagalayev, who resigned after a group of current and previous employees accused him of corruption in a letter published in the weekly newspaper Novaya Gazeta. At Tuesday's joint press conference by Svanidze and Sagalayev, the two men presented a picture of solidarity. Like Sagalayev, Svanidze said he is a strong advocate of continued government ownership of the channel. Sagalayev noted he had supported Svanidze, who was his deputy, as the new chairman.
