A Canadian businessman has been killed in an apparent assassination, shot dead as he tried to open the door to his apartment. Yury Gitman, 32, a Canadian leather clothes exporter, died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, head and stomach in the hall outside his apartment at 11 Ulitsa Butyrskaya in northern Moscow at about 11:35 p.m. last Thursday, said Igor Tsiryulnikov, a spokesman for the city police. The Savyolovsky district prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the killing, but police have not yet apprehended any suspects, Tsiryulnikov said. The murder weapon was a .38-caliber gun of unidentified foreign production, he added. Gitman, a Russian emigre, regularly traveled to Russia on short business trips, Tsiryulnikov said. The Canadian Embassy was unable to confirm Gitman's status as a Canadian citizen and has not yet been in contact with police, an embassy spokeswoman said Monday.
