In 'Kukly' Revenge, NTV Savages Prosecutor

After more than a month of attacks from the Prosecutor General's Office, NTV Independent Television has fought back. The company's Sunday ""Itogi"" news show broadcast a damning 15-minute overview of acting Prosecutor General Alexei Ilyushenko's career, portraying him as power hungry and frequently incompetent. The broadcast came just two days after the prosecutor's office intensified its criminal proceedings against NTV's satirical ""Kukly"" puppet show program. It charged the show's executive producer,Vasily Grigoryev, with tax evasion and with illegally using hard currency to pay for transactions. Leonid Nikitinsky, a journalist for the weekly Moskovskiye Novosti who was commissioned by NTV to report the story, said Monday that the ""Itogi"" broadcast came as an act of direct retaliation against a litany of moves the Prosecutor General's Office has taken against NTV.
