NTV Accuses Government of 'Campaign of Intimidation'

Surrounded by the puppet stars of the ""Kukly"" television show, the president of independent television company NTV announced Tuesday that the government's decision to bring criminal charges against the political satire program was part of a broad-based campaign to punish the company. ""They really did not like our coverage of the war in Chechnya,"" said Igor Malashenko. He added that the Prosecutor General's Office has also opened an investigation against NTV for an interview the company broadcast with Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev, leader of a terrorist raid in the southern Russian town of Budyonnovsk. Malashenko said the prosecutor's office has demanded that NTV supply it with the tapes of the interview. ""What we have here is a coordinated campaign to intimidate NTV,"" he said.
