NTV Slams Government Over 'Kukly' Case

The independent television company NTV has lashed out at the government and accused it of trying to curb press freedom, following the prosecutor general's announcement that he will bring charges against the station's satirical ""Kukly"" program. ""Russia has entered a period of heightened political tension,"" said prominent television journalist Yevgeny Kiselyov, speaking on NTV's weekly news program ""Itogi"" on Sunday night. ""Those in power, who, of course, do not wish to be out of power after the elections, are trying to establish firmer control over the media, over television most of all."" Kiselyov added that NTV, with its independent stance, was a particular thorn in the government's side. ""NTV has to be brought into line. There have been many attempts to do this in the past,"" Kiselyov said. ""They have threatened to take away our license, to deny us access to the airwaves, to nationalize NTV.
