Summer's Snow

As if taunting Muscovites who are celebrating the brief respite from winter, Moscow's pukh — white seeds shed by flowering trees — falls like snow for at least a month at the beginning of each summer.

Spring Cleaning: A Thankless Task

With the arrival of spring in Moscow comes an extremely thorough version of “spring cleaning.” The tasks of clearing streets and sidewalks of months’ worth of snow and ice — not to mention all the trash that has been buried under winter’s frosty deposits — falls into the calloused hands of the city’s dvorniki, or snow workers.

Wet Weekend

Meteorologists insist that the weather is nothing unusual and that over the whole of August, the rainfall will be close to the monthly average. Lazy afternoon at vdnkh

Once the home to proud displays of Soviet economic prowess, VDNKh has had many lives since then. The kiosks that sprouted up are now almost gone, the Stalin-era statues are being restored but as always it remains a favorite place for Muscovites to relax, wander around and rollerblade along its vast territory.
