O'Sullivan clocked 5 minutes, 25.36 seconds at the TSB Challenge meet Friday. She shaved more than three seconds off the previous record, set by Romania's Maricica Puica in July 1986 at London.
Scotland's Yvonne Murray, who finished second, also broke the previous mark as she was timed in 5:26.93.
Although the 2,000 is rarely contested, it is still recognized as a world record event by the International Amateur Athletic Federation.
