Several Moscow landmarks, including all the iconic Seven Sisters skyscrapers, will be plunged into darkness on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. as part of Earth Hour, a worldwide initiative to encourage energy conservation.

Ten bridges, as well as some 270 buildings on the Garden Ring and Boulevard Ring highways that encircle the downtown, will have their lights turned off, conserving 15 megawatts of electricity, City Hall's energy department said Thursday in an online statement.

Earth Hour, an initiative by the WWF nature conservation group, began in Sydney in 2007 to promote awareness about climate change and has since been observed in more than 160 countries. People are encouraged to turn off non-essential lights in their homes during the event.
