The Turkish embassy in Moscow was pummeled by stones thrown by unidentified men on Wednesday in apparent retaliation for Ankara's downing of a Russian Su-24 bomber on the Syria-Turkey border on Tuesday, a local news website reported.

“There are a lot of stones and broken glass at the embassy,” a correspondent for the Moslenta news site reported Wednesday. “The windows of the building are shattered, and there are traces of paint everywhere.”

Moslenta reported that many Russian police squadrons had been deployed to the embassy to barricade the building. A group of police reportedly chased away a group of young men in black jackets and hats toward Gorky Park.

Police were not actively seeking to arrest those responsible for vandalizing the Turkish embassy, and no arrests had been made, the report said. A spokesperson for the Moscow police told Moslenta that no information was available about detainees.

The vandalism followed a spontaneous protest outside the embassy on Tuesday following Turkey's downing of a Russian Su-24 fighter-bomber on the Turkish-Syrian border.
