Russian National Football Team Coach Officially Resigns

The coach of Russia's national football team has officially left his post after the country's poor performance at the 2016 UEFA European Championship, the Russian Football Union said in a statement Thursday.

Slutsky announced his intention to resign after Russia's 3-0 defeat to Wales in Toulouse on June 20 and failed to make it through to the play-off round. Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said at the time that he would be happy for Slutsky to continue his work.

There is no official information on who will replace Slutsky. The media has speculated that Stanislav Cherkesov, who from October last year headed the Legia Warsaw football club, may take over.

Slutsky ?€” also the head coach of the CSKA Moscow football club ?€” has been coaching the Russian national team since August last year after Russia terminated a contract with Italian trainer Fabio Capello.
