PARIS () -- The lawyer of jailed "Carlos the Jackal" said Friday that French President Francois Mitterrand approved a secret service plot to assassinate him in the early 1980s when he was defending the guerrilla's girlfriend.
In a barrage of press interviews, Jacques Verges charged the authorities had twice suggested that he be "quickly eliminated" as a dangerous individual believed to support terrorism.
Verges said his information came from Captain Paul Barril, former head of Mitterrand's anti-terrorism cellc.
