A murder investigation is under way after the headless and dismembered torsos of two women were found in a river in the Moscow region, the regional branch of Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement Thursday.

"The headless and limbless bodies of two women with multiple knife wounds to the chest and stomach were discovered on April 8 in the River Klyazma in the village of Mendeleyevo in the Solnechnogorsk district," the statement said.

The bodies had been in the water for some time, the statement said. The investigative committee said no missing reports had been filed for two women.

Investigators are now working to ascertain the women's identities and the circumstances of their death, and to find those responsible, the statement said.
