A trio of security guards who confessed to having beaten their colleague to death after it emerged he had treated a dog cruelly will stand trial in Khabarovsk, the Deita news agency reported Monday, citing a regional branch of the Russian Investigative Committee.

The four guards had been drinking on the job when it emerged that one of them had treated a dog cruelly, Deita reported.

One of the male suspects then attacked the victim in a bid to set him straight, and the other two — a male and a female — joined in shortly thereafter, according to Deita. The victim was punched, kicked and beaten with an axe and a stick.

After the beating the perpetrators dragged the victim's body out of the compound they had been guarding. Passers by called an ambulance upon discovering the victim, but medics were unable to save him.

The perpetrators confessed during the investigation, Deita reported.
