Russian Teenager Dies During Gym

Andrei Makhonin / Vedomosti

A 14-year-old boy has died during gym class at his school in the Ural Mountains, the regional branch of Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement on Saturday, adding that it was looking into the circumstances of the student's death.

The boy, who was attending a school for children with special needs in the town of Serov in the Sverdlovsk region, felt ill during a warm-up session in a physical education class on Friday, lost consciousness, and died at the scene shortly afterwards, the statement said.

Investigators have opened a criminal negligence case and are trying to determine whether the boy's health had been properly monitored, and whether he should have received medical clearance for attending gym classes, the statement said.
