BAKU — Russian boxer Gasan Gimbatov was released from hospital on Saturday after scans revealed he suffered no serious head trauma following his gold medal bout loss to Team GB's Joe Joyce at the European Games.

Gimbatov won silver in the super heavyweight division on Friday but was unable to attend the medal ceremony after he was struck by a series of heavy blows in the second round against Joyce.

"His health condition is good and he has been released from the hospital," Konstantin Vybornov, the Russian federation press secretary, told reporters.

"He has been through all the procedures for checking his head. He feels well and is back in the Athletes Village. He is going to participate in the honoring ceremony in the Russia House this evening."
