Russian hackers, possibly collaborating with the government, recently attacked America's largest bank, JPMorgan, as well as other targets in the American financial system, according to the preliminary results of an FBI investigation cited by Bloomberg on Thursday.

Due to the complexity of the attacks, the investigation is considering whether the Russian government might have been involved, the report said.

The hackers broke through multiple layers of cyber-defense systems and stole gigabytes of sensitive data, Bloomberg said, citing several undisclosed sources with knowledge of the investigation.

The attacks came as U.S.-Russian relations are at their lowest point since the Cold War due to tit-for-tat sanctions over the Ukraine crisis.
