Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has imposed a quarantine in an outlying southwestern district of the capital after a pet there was diagnosed with rabies, the Interfax news agency reported Wednesday.

The quarantine in the suburb of Pervomaiskoye, a section of the larger New Moscow region, will be in place until mid-September, during which time cat and dog shows are prohibited and animals cannot be sold or taken outside the quarantine zone, according to an order signed by Sobyanin, the report said.

The measures were introduced after an unspecified domestic animal was diagnosed with rabies earlier this week, an unidentified official at City Hall was quoted as saying.

It marked the 13th registered case of rabies in the capital since the start of the year, Interfax reported.

The mayor also imposed a rabies quarantine in the district of Konkovo in southern Moscow on July 3, the report said.

Meanwhile, far across the country in Siberia, another quarantine order was issued after a wild badger who was later diagnosed with rabies bit a dog and then its owner, Interfax reported Wednesday.

The owner, a male resident of the village of Tukman in the Tyumen region, killed the badger, the report said, and the regional governor declared a two-month quarantine in the village.
