Prosecutors See Western Influence in Radical Groups

The Prosecutor General's Office has accused pro-West forces of encouraging terrorist attacks, Vedomosti reported?  Tuesday.

"Ideologists of Western-style democratization of Russia" coordinate radical youth groups, and the number of terrorist attacks carried out by the groups has grown, Deputy Prosecutor General Viktor Grin said in a statement dated May 12 and posted on Vedomosti's web site.

Grin identified two groups — the banned National Bolshevik Party and the ultranationalist Movement Against Illegal Immigration — and accused them of engaging in extremist activities.

Grin did not provide any crime figures or examples of extremist activities.

Grin said the National Bolsheviks have been trained to fight law enforcement officers similar to the way that young protesters did in uprisings in Georgia, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan.

Grin noted that the National Bolsheviks have coordinated their protests with The Other Russia, an opposition coalition led by former chess champion Garry Kasparov.
