Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has imposed a quarantine in an outlying southwestern district of the capital after a pet there was diagnosed with rabies, Interfax reported Wednesday.
The quarantine in the suburb of Pervomayskoye, a section of the larger “New Moscow” region, will be in place until mid-September and will involve a prohibition on cat and dog shows, as well as selling animals or taking them outside the area, according to an order signed by Sobyanin, the report said.
The measures were introduced after an unspecified domestic animal was diagnosed with rabies earlier this week, an unidentified official at City Hall was quoted as saying.
It marked the 13th registered case of rabies in the capital since the start of the year, Interfax reported.
Earlier, the mayor imposed a rabies quarantine in the district of Konkovo in southern Moscow on July 3, the report said.
