A petition calling for the current Russian National Football team to be disbanded has been signed by more than 100,000 people on social activism site Change.org.

“Let's reform the Russian National Football Team. We want to be proud of it, not ashamed,” the creator of the petition, Artyom Khasanov, wrote on the website.

Khazanov also suggested calling up new players to the national side, spending money on new football pitches and focusing on the development of young players.

The petition comes after Russia failed to progress further than the group stages of the 2016 UEFA European Championship. It ended bottom of its group after drawing to England and losing to Wales and Slovakia.
