Top regional officials from across Russia were warned by the head of the Kremlin administration Monday that they must work actively with civil society to prevent street protests, Gazeta.ru news website reported.

Kremlin chief of staff Sergei Ivanov made the comments at a lecture in the Moscow region for regional officials — mostly deputy governors — on how to handle political, economic and ethnic affairs in their regions, the report said.

The event also featured a lecture by Central Bank First Deputy Chairman Ksenia Yudayeva on the state of the Russian economy, while presidential aide Andrei Fursenko and Education Minister Dmitry Livanov spoke about education policy, and presidential aide Vladimir Tolstoi lectured on cultural policy, Gazeta.ru reported, citing an unnamed source.
