German, Russian Men Charged for Sex in a Kazakh Train Station

Denis Grishkin / Vedomosti

A 60-year-old German and his 33-year-old Russian lover have been fined $107 each for having sex in a Kazakh train station, the Interfax news agency reported Wednesday.

Following Monday's amorous encounter, the Kostanay regional court found both men guilty of "violating public order and disrespecting those around them," slapping both with fines of almost 20,000 tenge ($107), Interfax reported, citing a court spokesperson.

Homosexuality is not illegal in Kazakhstan, and a draft law banning the promotion of nontraditional sexual relations to minors was ruled unconstitutional by Kazakhstan's Constitutional Council in May.

The ruling came amid concerns that the bill, similar to a law adopted by Russia in June 2013, would harm Kazakhstan's bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics after a group of prominent international athletes spoke out against the proposed legislation.

News of the amorous encounter in Kazakhstan comes a day after a Russian girl was fined $450 for having sex with her boyfriend in a tunnel in the Moscow metro system.

The Presnensky District Court ruled that the defendant — who was identified only as a female under the age of 18 — had violated transport safety rules through her actions, the Rossiiskaya Gazeta newspaper reported Tuesday. Police are still trying to track down her boyfriend.
