Families of Killed Metro Passengers to Get 1 Million Rubles in Compensation

The families of passengers killed in a metro crash on Tuesday morning will receive 1 million rubles ($30,000) in compensation from the Moscow city government, in accordance with a mayoral decree.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has also instructed City Hall to award 500,000 rubles ($15,000) in compensation to those injured in the accident, his press secretary Gulnara Penkova told the Interfax news agency.

The families of those killed and injured in Tuesday's accident will receive social support from the municipal government to help them cope with the tragedy, the report said.

The families of those killed in the crash will additionally receive up to 2 million rubles ($60,000) in compensation from the Moscow metro, which will give up to 1 million rubles to those injured in the crash, depending on the severity of their injuries, Penkova was quoted as saying.

Twenty people were killed and about 120 injured on Tuesday after three carriages derailed between the western Slavyanksy Bulvar and Park Pobedy metro stations on the city's Dark Blue Line.
