A criminal investigation has been opened into the deaths of eight newborns in Russia's Oryol region, the local branch of the Investigative Committee said Tuesday in an online statement.

Eight newborn babies died in the Orlov Perinatal Center between Jan. 3 and Jan. 18, the statement said. In seven of those cases, the babies were born prematurely, and suffered from a series of abnormalities and pathologies, the statement said.

Alarmed by the high number of deaths in such a short period, investigators have opened an investigation into the fatalities on suspicions of negligence, the report said.
