Aborted Space Link-Up

MOSCOW () -- A Russian cargo craft will Tuesday make a second run Tuesday at linking up with the orbiting Mir space station after an abortive docking attempt over the weekend, a ground control spokesman said Monday.

Automatic systems on the unmanned Progress M-24 vessel, launched last Wednesday, aborted the docking Saturday with only 150 meters to go.

"The docking mechanisms of the Progress appeared too sensitive for the Mir's vibrations. The docking is rescheduled for tomorrow," the spokesman said.

The setback is symbolic of the malaise in the once prestigious Russian space program which, in the Soviet-era days of superpower rivalry with the United States, had a huge budget.
