Siberian Man Who Fought With Ukraine's Rebels Honored at Home

A man from southern Siberia who joined Ukrainian rebels and died fighting in the east of the former Soviet country has been honored with a memorial plaque in his hometown, local news website Alfa Novosti reported.

The tribute to Ivan Korolkov was unveiled Sunday on the wall of his parents' house in the Altai region village of Ozerki, Alfa Novosti said.

The board said that Korolkov "died in a battle with the Ukrainian junta" in January aged 25. His mother told Alfa Novosti that he had wanted to enter a Russian military academy following his national service but lacked the necessary qualifications.

Thousands of Russian volunteers are estimated to have fought with Ukrainian rebels in the Donbass region of the country's east after a pro-Europe government swept to power in Kiev last year.
