Foreign Films Set 5-Year Box Office Record in Russia

Foreign films earned 3.32 billion rubles ($51.8 million) in October at the Russian box office, a record high over the past five years, a recent study showed.

The leading foreign film at the Russian box office last month was Ridley Scott's sci-fi drama “The Martian,” which was watched by 3.74 million people and earned more than 1 billion rubles, a study by the market analysts firm Movie Research issued Monday showed.

The animated movie “Hotel Transylvania 2”, fantasy film “Pan” and gothic romantic drama “Crimson Peak” are also among the most profitable foreign films that helped set the October record.

In total, the attendance of foreign films in October reached 12.29 million people, according to the report.

The audience for Russian films on the contrary fell dramatically over the same period. In October domestic films were viewed by 1.67 million people, down 36.8 percent compared to the same month last year.

Domestic films earned a total of 387.4 million rubles in October in Russia, down 38 percent compared to October last year.

The total share of domestic films at the Russian box office was at 10.7 percent last month, the report said. The leading Russian film of the month was "Voin" (Warrior), which made 207.6 million rubles in October.
