Double-Decker Trains to Run to Moscow's Domodedovo Airport Next Year

Double-decker express trains will begin running to Moscow's Domodedovo Airport in June next year, news agency Moskva reported Wednesday.

Aeroexpress, the company that operates Moscow's rail links with the city's three airports, hopes the more spacious trains will increase passenger capacity by 40 percent while alleviating overcrowding.

Swiss rail company Stadler inked a contract in May 2013 to build 25 double-decker trains for Aeroexpress with an option for 13 more.

The company's old single-decker trains will go back into use by state-owned Russian Railways, or will be given to the regions, Moskva reported. The first double-decker will be arriving in Shcherbinka, a Moscow region town, on Nov. 10 for testing.

Domodedovo's Aeroexpress trains run from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., making the trip from the airport to central Moscow's Paveletsky Station in 45 minutes. Double-decker trains will also start running to Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo airports by the end of 2016.
