"Established in 1899, Ogonyok is the oldest illustrated magazine in Russia. It started out as a supplement to a stock-market bulletin, but its popularity allowed it to become independent in 1902. Ogonyok has published some of Russia's most important photographs, such as this shot of Tsar Nicholas II (left) as well as Pyotr Otsup's legendary photographs of the Communist Party. Today it has less significance as a glossy, arts and society magazine. The Zurab Tsereteli Arts Gallery is displaying some of the best-known pictures from Ogonyok's photo archive for an exhibition titled "Life is Splendid," which opens April 15. The museum is located at 19 Prechistenka. M. Kropotkinskaya. 637-4150/4771.
