Chechnya's Prosecutor's Office have been asked to investigate comments made by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov for extremism, following an appeal by St. Petersburg activist and deputy Maxim Reznik, news website reported Monday.

In the appeal, Reznik asked that Kadyrov’s statements about Russian opposition activists in which he called them “jackals” and “enemies of the people” be checked for extremism.

The answer received from the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office said that “the appeal was sent to the Chechen Prosecutor's Office,” who would conduct the investigation, Fontanka reported, citing Reznik.

Reznik said that he was dissatisfied by the reply.

“In accordance with the federal anti-extremism law, such issues must be examined by the Prosecutor General or his deputy,” he said. “This reply proves once again that the federal government does not control the situation in Chechnya,” he added.

The deputy plans to send a second appeal, according to Fontanka.
