Activists Block Russian Trucks in Ukraine's Zakarpattia Region

Vedomosti

Ukrainian activists have begun to block heavy trucks with Russian number plates in Ukraine's western Zakarpattia region, the RBC news agency reported Friday.

The activists ?€” including participants of the fighting in the Donbass ?€” have created a checkpoint in the village of Nizhniye Vorota on the region's border to stop Russian trucks traveling in the direction of Slovakia and Hungary.

The protest action began Thursday evening, led by the "patriotic organizations" of the Zakarpattia region, according to local news website Mukachevo.net, with the right-wing Right Sector nationalist group joining Friday morning.

According to Right Sector's statement, many Russian trucks pass the local checkpoint due to the suspension of the cargo transportation agreement between Russia and Poland, which forced truckers to look for alternative routes.

Some truckers "turn around immediately," in response to the protest checkpoint, while others argue that they have nothing to do with politics, protester Taras Deyak said, RBC reported.

Similar protest actions are going to spread across Ukraine's western border, far-right Svoboda party spokesman Oleh Tyahnybok said on his Facebook page.
