Russian Recall of 'Lucky Thief' License Plates Following Disruptive Popularity

Moscow's road police department has ordered the recall of car license plates that spelled out “VOR” — a Russian word for “thief” — after the plates' popularity in Moscow's Zelenograd suburb caused problems for road police, a news report said Thursday.

The license plates with “VOR” followed by the supposedly lucky numbers “777,” which indicate the region where the plates were issued, are so in demand that they are to be withdrawn from circulation, Interior Ministry spokesman Andrei Galiakberov said, state-run RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The “V***OR 777” plates will now be distributed among other districts of the Russian capital, and will be issued according to the computerized waiting list for new license plates, Galiakberov was cited as saying.
