A watchman in the Russian republic of Buryatia said he repelled an assault of 20 robbers descending upon a jade storage facility after shooting one of the assailants dead, Russian media reported Monday.
The republic's police said in a statement that the private security guard called in to report that “from 4 to 5 in the morning, around 20 unidentified people armed with an unidentified firearm trespassed on the territory of the enterprise,” which Russian media said houses jade.
Police said the guard, whom they did not name, used a Saiga sporting rifle to kill one of the armed men, who was identified by police as an unemployed man in his late 20s who lived in the town of Orlik.
The man died of the gunshot wound on the spot, the report said. Police said they were looking for the other trespassers, who had fled the scene. It was not immediately clear whether the guard would face any charges.
