Mother's letter:

My name is Mariya. I have 2 children. My son is 13 years old now. And when he was 2,5 I was told that according to the results of audiological examination he could not hear. My grief had no consolation, as nobody could even imagine that such a gifted boy could be deaf. He could do everything by himself, at the age of 2 he could collect big puzzles, draw pictures. When I found out information about cochlear implantation I struggled a lot to get this opportunity. Every year I was told that financing would be granted next year but no result finally occurred. I had been waiting for 5 years. In May 2010 we finally got cochlear implant. Nikita waited for this event with such excitement, he wanted to hear so much!

And when I saw him after surgery I started to cry but stopped me with a gesture which meant "don't cry! I can hear now!" As the surgery was done rather late, Nikita was already 8 years old, speech development is rather difficult for him. Nikita can not say clearly even his name. His father refused to accept him as soon as he knew about his deafness. He did not helped us, paid no money. When I tried to marry again but this marriage was not successful either. Now I live alone, had no money support from second husband either. He helped his daughter only with products and clothes. I can not work now as I stays with my daughter who is 2 years old.

I got pension for my son, it is 15 000 RUB. I paid for son's travel expenses to his school, as the school is located in another city (45 km from our city). He has to go there as there are no speech therapists in our local city who could work with Nikita. We hire a car and pay 9000 RUB to driver. Nikita traveled to school with 2 more children with hearing problems by this car. As Nikita is a teenager he is very shy because of his problems with speech. He asks me to help him so that people can understand him. He wants to communicate with normal hearing children easily and especially with his lovely small sister. She tries to understand him but she can not!

I have heard a lot about rehabilitation center in Fryazino. I contacted other families who go to rehabilitation there. Results are astounding!

But this center is private and I will have to pay for its services by myself. But a week course costs 45 000 RUB and it is unbearable sum of money for me..

And it is necessary to go through 3 week courses per year to have results.

That is why I address to you with hope and request to help me in paying for rehabilitation course in this center. And then my Nikita will be able to learn oral speech and communicate with people in hearing world!

With respect and big mother's request for support!

Speech therapist's conclusion:

cochlear implantation was made in 2010. The boy selectively contacts unknown people. He is not interested in work with teachers, sometimes even protests. Nikita can hear all sounds of speech range. Vocabulary is very poor, contacts mostly with the help of gesture language. He has good imitation ability, can repeat what he hears even if he does not recognize the meaning. General development is delayed in comparison with normal hearing level.

Recommended:

Intensive lessons for development of hearing performance and forming of oral speech with the help of speech therapists and logopedists, unassisted work at home with a set of rehabilitation materials

Director of rehabilitation center, speech therapist Muntyan E.V.
