Polar Bear Cubs Take First Steps Outside Den at Moscow Zoo

Moscow Zoo

A pair of polar bear cubs born this winter at Moscow Zoo have taken their first few steps outside of their den, the wildlife park said in a statement.

The cubs, who were born in November, have spent the past three months living with their mother, who was hibernating in one of the park's inner enclosures.

But recently the cubs have started going out for short walks in their open-air cage, giving visitors a chance to observe them, the zoo said Friday in a press release.

The cubs still stick close to their mother and follow her back into the den as soon as she makes a special snorting sound, the zoo added.

The Moscow Zoo currently keeps three adult polar bears: two females called Murma and Simona, who is the mother of the two cubs, and one male called Vrangel.
