Canada Says Will Punish Diplomat's Attackers

Canada's Foreign Ministry assured the Russian Embassy on Saturday that suspects behind the attack on a Russian diplomat will be punished.

A 44-year-old Russian diplomat was stabbed in the back and slashed on his arms in an Ottawa apartment building near the Russian Embassy on Friday and taken to hospital.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the diplomat, who was allegedly attacked by hooligans, is in a stable condition. The victim was intoxicated when emergency crews arrived, paramedics said, local media reported.

There was no indication that the attack was "politically motivated," a spokesman for Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs said. The incident triggered fears of a national security breach in Canada, media reports said.
