Moscow Police Foil ATM Robbery

Moscow police foiled an attempted ATM robbery in a branch of Sberbank in the north of the city, a news report said Monday.

Law enforcement officers have arrested one of the armed robbers, who was wounded during the operation, but the other two suspects got away, Interfax reported

The robbers intended to use a gas cylinder and a stun-gun to open the machine and grab the cash, ITAR-TASS reported.

"The suspects at 2:45 a.m. Monday attempted to steal money from a Sberbank branch bankomat on 65 Dmitrovskoye Shosse," the Interior Ministry said.

When the police arrived at the scene, they saw three men in camouflage. One of the suspects aimed a gun at a police officer's head, forcing the police to fire three shots into the air and one at the suspect.

"The offender was slightly wounded; two of his accomplices managed to escape. The wounded suspect was arrested and received the necessary medical treatment," a ministry spokesperson said.

Police are searching for the remaining two suspects.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
