Smolensk Crash Mourned

The first ladies of Russia and Poland joined relatives Sunday in remembering the Poles killed in a plane crash near Smolensk six months ago.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife were among 96 people who died in the April 10 crash. They were on their way to commemorate the 20,000 Poles killed by Soviet secret police during World War II.

"Russians sincerely share Poland's pain and grief," President Dmitry Medvedev's wife, Svetlana, told those gathered Sunday at a memorial site.

She said that although there have been difficult pages in the history of the two countries, Russians and Poles have found ways of supporting one another and showing mutual respect.

She was joined by Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski's wife, Anna.
