Polio Outbreak in Tajikistan Widens

A polio outbreak in Tajikistan has spread, with at least 108 confirmed cases among children, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.

Mass vaccination campaigns are under way in Tajikistan and neighboring Uzbekistan this week to prevent further spreading of the virus, WHO spokeswoman Sona Bari said.

She said 12 Tajik children had died from paralysis, but it was not yet clear whether the deaths were from polio.

Meanwhile, three children from Tajikistan have been hospitalized in the Moscow region with suspected polio, Interfax reported Tuesday. Two more Tajik girls were diagnosed with polio in Russia last week.
